Meat, herbs, spices ... and Guinness Stout give this uniquely Irish food its unbeatable taste. Here is our favorite recipe for Irish stew with a taste of Guinness Stout!

Guinness Beef Stew Recipe: Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of tender beef
  • Table Salt and black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons of oil
  • 2 tablespoons white flour
  • 1 crushed garlic clove
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 2 large chopped onions
  • 1 1/4 cups Guinness Stout
  • 2 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 2 cups of diced carrots
  • A sprig of thyme, crushed

Guinness Beef Stew: Preparation

  1. Trim the meat, then cut into 2-inch cubes. Roll cubes in 1 tbsp of olive oil.
  2. Mix flour with salt, pepper and cayenne, then roll beef in the mixture until fully covered.
  3. Heat remaining oil and brown the meat on all sides, then add the onions, garlic and tomato puree. Cook on low heat for five minutes.
  4. Remove the contents from the skillet and transfer to a casserole.
  5. In the same skillet, pour half of the Guinness stout and boil while constantly stirring in order to dissolve the carmelized meat juices. Pour the mixture onto the browned beef, followed by the remaining Guinness.
  6. Add the carrots and crushed thyme, together with other seasonings. Simmer over low heat for 2-3 hours or until meat is tender.

A Few Tips and Facts...

Guinness stew makes you feel good. This is due in part to Guinness 8% alcohol content, but it's more a matter of hearty ingredients, well combined.

This stew is also a great after-party dish. A bowl is often served to people who have been up all night drinking in order to get rid of their hangover.

Most importantly it is a reminder of our Irish heritage, combining the best of Irish flavors into one irresistible meal.

Try it with diced onions and cheese on the top, or with Irish soda bread on the side.

Also try substituting the beef with lamb for a more authentic Irish taste. Chicken or pork are also great substitutes for variety.

Because of its versatility, it’s no wonder it lives on as one of the most delicious expressions of our Irish heritage.
