The recipe below contains lovely Irish flavors and is a perfect dessert for your next St Patrick's Day (or any day for that matter!). Think of it as great way to put an Irish twist on a classic dessert.

As with many authentic Irish dishes, it is made of simple ingredients and is simple to make. Breakfast, snack or comfort food, Irish or not, you should really give it a try. Your taste buds will thank you for it!

Irish Bread Pudding: Ingredients

Here are the essential ingredients for our favorite Irish bread pudding recipe:

1/4 cup butter
1 3/4 cups milk
1 piece of any sliced bread in your pantry (stale bread is fine)
1/2 cup of raisins
1/4 cup of any brand of Irish whiskey
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 cup of granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 can evaporated milk
Cooking spray
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

Irish Bread Pudding: Preparation

The preparation for Irish bread pudding is quite simple: Here it is in 10 easy steps:

Preheat the oven to 350°.
Brush one side of the sliced bread with the melted butter.
Place the buttered bread – buttered side up – on a baking sheet and warm for 10 minutes.
After the bread has cooled, cut into ½-inch cubes and set aside.
Combine the whiskey and raisins in a small bowl and let stand for 10 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine the 1% milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract and skim milk. Stir well using a whisk.
Add the prepared bread cubes and the whiskey-raisin mixture into the milk and egg mixture. Gently press the bread cubes into the liquid. Let stand for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, mix the sugar and cinnamon.
Spray a 13 x 9-inch prepared baking dish. Pour the bread and liquid mixture into the tray before spreading the sugar-cinnamon mix on top.
Bake the pudding for 35 minutes at 350°. Allow to cool.
Serve at room temperature with desired sauce.

Sauce Choices

The sauce is what gives this delicious dish its Irish character. Two of our favorites are Irish Cream sauce and Irish Whiskey Caramel sauce.

Irish Cream Sauce: Ingredients

2 cups whipping cream
2 teaspoons water
6 tablespoons Irish cream liqueur
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons of corn starch

Irish Cream Sauce: Preparation

Combine the whipping cream, Irish cream, vanilla and sugar.
Bring to a boil. Be sure to stir frequently.
In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water and then whisk into the cream mixture.
Continue boiling the sauce for 3 minutes or until it thickens.
Let cool and then pour over your Irish bread pudding.

Irish Whiskey Caramel Sauce: Ingredients

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/4 cup butter
2/3 cup of water
1/4 cup of any brand of Irish whiskey
2 ounces cream cheese
1/4 cup milk

Irish Whiskey Caramel Sauce: Preparation

Boil these ingredients in a saucepan until the mixture becomes golden in color. Do not stir when the sugar dissolves.
Remove the mixture from the heat and add the butter and cream cheese. Stir constantly with a whisk and then cool slightly.
Stir in the milk and whiskey and serve over the bread pudding.

As with any truly Irish food, ingredients can be mixed and mingled to produce your own personal version of Irish bread pudding. Try it with ice cream (our favorite - yum!) or with homemade fruit preserves.
