The first of our Cong Village things to know is: if you arrive without much context, as I did, it can feel almost accidental. It has an oddly “Asian” - sounding name, which initially struck me as out of place on list of things to do in Ireland. I could not have been more wrong!
We All Have a Unique and Personal "Irish Side."

My son and I found Cong Village (make sure you pronounce a hard “g” when you say “Cong”) on the border of County Mayo and County Galway, at the northern edge of Lough Corrib. We learned that two rivers, the Cong River and the Clonbur River, flow directly through the village, carrying water from Lough Mask into Corrib.
Ireland’s earliest settlers understood the importance of such places. Water meant food, transport, protection, and trade. It also meant symbolism. Rivers were not just practical; they were meaningful. Cong’s setting made it suitable not just for habitation, but for reflection.
The most visible historical landmark in Cong is Cong Abbey,
founded in the 12th century on the site of earlier religious settlements. The
stone ruins you see today are the result of centuries of development and
reconstruction.

Like Clonmacnoise and other monastic sites we had visited, we learned that Cong Abbey grew within a tradition that valued learning, discipline, and community life rooted in the natural world.
Figures such as St Patrick, St Brigid, and St Ita belong to the earlier phase of this tradition — a time when monastic life was still being defined. Later sites like Cong Abbey represent what that tradition became once it was more firmly established.
As we walked quietly through the abbey grounds we were struck by how elegant were the structures – and yet at the same time restrained. The buildings felt integrated into the landscape rather than imposed upon it. Nothing shouted for attention…

... except maybe the statue of John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara standing in the town plaza. Huh??!! Another thing that seemed oddly out of place at the time. But again, that was a me problem.
Believe it or not, after 13 trips to the Emerald Isle and more than a
decade of developing Irish-Expressions.com – I had never made the connection
between Cong, Ireland and The
Quiet Man, a romantic drama starring Wayne and O’Hara and filmed on site in
Ireland. Go figure.

When we finally turned our attention from this more modern discovery to the ancient village itself, we found one of the most striking things about Cong is its quiet authenticity. Even with its fame, it remains a working village.
Modern Cong balances its past with a present that remains practical and welcoming. Cafés, small shops, and accommodations exist without overt commercialization. According to the local family we joined for lunch, visitors are usually present, but not overwhelming.
Woodland paths lead along the riverbanks, crossing stone bridges and opening into clearings that feel almost private. Unlike more famous walking destinations, these paths are rarely crowded. You may share them with a handful of others — or no one at all.

The walking here is not about elevation or challenge. It’s about immersion. About noticing how light reflects off water. About how sound changes as you move. About how Ireland can feel deeply alive without being dramatic.

Just outside the village, we made a quick stop at Ashford Castle, now a luxury hotel but originally a medieval stronghold.
The presence of the Castle is an interesting contrast. While the village feels modest and inviting, the castle is grand and guarded. Where Cong encourages movement and exploration, Ashford suggests more of a retreat. Both experiences exist side by side, and the contrast between them is part of what makes the area so very, very interesting.
We left Cong Village deeply surprised by how big an impact it had made on us. Part of it was timing. Cong appeared midway through our trip — after the iconic sights, between the long drives. We found Cong as I said, almost by accident, looking for something to do ‘on the way’ to our next destination. But oh my gosh, it is definitely a destination on its own.
