Today there are many recipes 'out there' including apple potato bread which had its origins in Armagh, Northern Ireland, famous for its apple orchards.

Here we will introduce the basic bread, with some ideas for adding some creative Irish flair.

Irish Potato Bread Recipe: A Bit O' Background...

The standard variety of Irish potato bread is made from potato flour and wheat flour, and the ratio between the two different kinds of flour tends to vary.

Our ratio is typically 8 oz. mashed potatoes and then 3 oz. plain flour but this basically comes down to personal preference.

Germany, Peru and Ukraine all have their own types of potato bread as well; however the Irish variety is very popular and is often made into a variety of pastries.

Below is a basic recipe, and you can experiment from there. Please let us know what you discover and send us your favorite variations!

Irish Potato Bread:  Ingredients

  • 3oz plain flour
  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • Just a smidge of salt
  • A single oz. of butter
  • 8 oz. of potatoes mashed
  • 2 tsp. of milk

Irish Potato Bread: Preparation

  1. First mix the flour into a bowl and stir it into the baking powder.
  2. Once you have this mixed together pour in a small amount of salt and mix that as well.
  3. Once you are satisfied with its consistency you can add in some butter and stir in any desired spices.
  4. Finally, add the mashed potatoes and just a bit of milk to keep it all soft but still thick enough to turn into dough.
  5. Lay the finished product out onto a board and roll to about ½ an inch thick.
  6. Bake on greased cooking sheet in the oven at 200 degrees for twenty minutes.

You can serve it with honey and butter or some home made jam; delish!
