Malahide Castle things to know begin right here: due to its close proximity to Dublin Airport, it is usually the most convenient Irish castle to visit if you're coming from overseas.  No tour of the castles of Ireland would be complete without it!

The last time I visited was to celebrate my third son's high-school graduation (ok we were a few years late).  I asked him what he wanted to do while we were there and his instructions were simple: "Dad I want to go to a castle, smoke a cigar and look like a boss." 

I immediately thought of Malahide Castle.  With its 260 acres of sprawling parkland and majestic structural features, I could think of no place better to begin our tour of Ireland ... and ok, to look like a boss.

How to Get There

Just a short 20-minute drive north of Dublin Airport via the M1 and R107, this treasure trove of architecture, history, and legend is an essential stop on any Irish itinerary.  We certainly made it a priority on ours.

The winding roads from Dublin Airport led us through the charming Irish countryside, providing a serene build-up to the majesty that is Malahide Castle. Upon arrival in Malahide, we simply followed the signs to the castle grounds, where ample parking awaited.

This was my fifth visit to Malahide so I already know:  the allure of Malahide Castle lies not only in its storied history but also in its sheer beauty and the vibrant tales it tells. The castle's unique furnishings, intricate interiors, and the expansive gardens offer a window into the lives of the Talbot family who resided there for nearly eight centuries. 

This time around we chose not to tour the structure itself, preferring to enjoy the sunny weather and beautiful garden paths.  Eventually we chose a wrought-iron bench from which to do the boss thing and chat with fellow travelers and garden-walkers.

10 Things to Know About the Castle

The main reason I visit the Emerald Isle with my lads is to give them an experience of their family's history and homeland.  So I always regale them with "10 Things to Know" about wherever we venture on the Emerald Isle.  Here they are for the popular Irish landmark known as Malahide Castle:

1. It Has Impressive Historic Longevity: The Talbot family owned Malahide Castle for over 800 years, from 1185 until 1975, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Ireland (Source: Malahide Castle & Gardens Official Website).  Their ownership began with a knight who built the castle in 1185 and ended when his descendants passed it to the Irish Government in 1976.
2. It Was a Gift from King Henry II: The land was originally granted to Richard Talbot by King Henry II as a reward for his service during the Norman invasion of Ireland (Source: Malahide Historical Society).
3. It Is Haunted: The castle is reputed to be haunted by several ghosts, including Puck, a jester who is said to have fallen in love with Lady Elenora Fitzgerald. His image is said to appear in photographs (Source: Irish Ghost Stories).
4. It Contains Magnificent Works of Art: The Great Hall once housed the renowned Talbot collection of paintings, considered one of the finest private collections in Ireland (Source: Art History Ireland Journal).
5. The Battle of the Boyne Changed Everything:  Malahide has weathered many battles and storms. The most notable was the Battle of the Boyne. It is said the morning of the famous battle, 14 members of the family ate breakfast in the Great Hall (by that evening, all were dead). (Source: Historical Records at Irish Castles).

The Gardens are Simply Magnificent: The extensive gardens surrounding Malahide Castle include a butterfly house and a series of themed gardens inspired by countries from around the world, designed by Lord Milo Talbot (Source: Malahide Castle Visitor's Guide).  Known as the Talbot Botanic Gardens, the expansive grounds also feature a Victorian conservatory, acres of landscaped parks and a traditional walled garden.
7. It Plays a Key Role in Irish Literature: The castle has inspired countless tales of intrigue and romance, enhancing its cultural significance in Ireland's literary history (Source: Irish Literary Archive).
8. It Has Changed - A Lot: Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several architectural transformations including additions in the Gothic revival style in the 19th century (Source: Architectural Digest Ireland).  Although many parts of the castle date back to the 12th century, Malahide was enlarged during the 18th century. In 1765, there were also new towers added to the building.
9. It is Now Public Property: Malahide Castle became a public property and opened to visitors in 1976, dramatically transforming it into one of Ireland's most popular tourist destinations (Source: Malahide Tourism Office).

Restoration is a Priority: Recent restoration efforts have focused on maintaining the castle's structural integrity while enhancing its historical charm, ensuring it can be enjoyed by future generations.  (Source: National Trust of Ireland).  Today you can tour the museum run by the Malahide Historical Society, stroll through the Talbot Botanic Gardens or even plan a private event in the incredible Gothic great hall.
