Tullynally Castle Things to Know:  Why Visit?

Here are some fun facts about this remarkable Irish landmark. Hopefully they will entice you to pay a visit in person!

But if that’s not in the cards, you can always use them to impress your friends with your knowledge of one of Ireland’s largest inhabited castles.

  • Originally a Georgian country house, it was transformed over the centuries into a massive Gothic Revival estate, complete with towers, battlements, and an extraordinary network of gardens.
  • Tullynally has been home to the Pakenham family — later Earls of Longford — for more than 350 years, making it one of the longest continuously inhabited estates in Ireland.
  • The castle’s expansion in the early 19th century created over 120 rooms, which is why Tullynally is often described as more a “castellated mansion” than a medieval fortress.
  • Many interior rooms still contain original portraits, furniture, travel artifacts, and collections brought back from diplomatic service in India and China.
  • Inspired by those travels, the gardens include quirky Eastern features — such as a Tibetan garden, ornamental lakes, grottoes, and exotic plantings rare in Ireland at the time.
  • The estate spans 12 acres of gardens and woodlands, with scenic walking paths that make Tullynally especially popular among gardeners and photographers.
  • The Pakenham family still lives in part of the castle, adding a sense of authenticity and continuity you won’t find in many Irish estates.
  • Tullynally’s café and courtyard sit in the former stable yard, offering a quiet place to enjoy homemade treats after touring the grounds.
  • Guided tours are available on select days and often include stories from the Longford family’s centuries-long history.
  • Tullynally is sometimes used for concerts and cultural events, thanks to its atmospheric interiors and sweeping outdoor spaces.
